Help answer the question about interior design
How would I go about getting a Bachelors Degree in Interior Design?
I will be an Int'l student and have taken TOEFL. In 1 year I would have completed my undergrad studies from India in Commerce field (bcom) and i already hold a diploma in Interiors. I am working currently and have completed one year at my current job with an impressive portfolio. Now to further enhance my design skills and gain a wider perceptive, I am seeking a Bachelors degree in Interior Design and I was wondering if it would require a SAT. I want to get the course done in 2 years at max, as i already have a diploma, i might not have to take all courses. Which universities offer such program and how much would they cost? Also are they reputed and Accredited colleges? If it would be close to New Jersey it would be awesome.. Thanks for helping me make an important decision in my life.

Interior design consultancies understand light in all its forms. In London, lighting is crucial to interior design consultancies that need to create stunning results. In this, the eighth and final article in my series which I call “DeLIGHTed by Design,” I continue to draw on my experience working with some of <a rel="nofollow" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" rel="external nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.globalinteriordesign.com/”>London’s Top Interior Design Consultancies to explain this exciting area.

When most schoolchildren are asked to think of the countryside, they often imagine the hot, shimmering flicker of a bonfire on a crisp autumn evening or the comforting flare of a scented candle. But how is an interior design consultancy to re-interpret these fabulously earthy and atmospheric scenes for, say, an elegant central London flat? The answer is artificial light.

Interior design consultancies recognise that artificial light is available in many different shades. It is similar to the situation with paint, where buckets that are labelled “white” can actually contain a multitude of different tones. Interior design consultancies employ colour professionals who know that the cool white light of an energy-efficient bulb creates an entirely different effect from the warm yellow-orange tones of a tungsten filament. In London, low-voltage halogen options are often used in darker flats where there is a need to add light during the daytime. Interior design consultancies will install dimmer switches that allow homeowners to reduce the brightness of halogens at night, causing them to adopt a more husky yellow-red glow that is akin to an ancient lantern or oil lamp. By contrast, lamplight is too yellow for most interior design consultancies to include for daytime use, and indeed it can lead to sleepiness or lethargy at work (one of the reasons it is almost never seen in London offices). But at night, tungsten lamps become much more warm and welcoming.

Some interior design consultancies have a love-hate relationship with fluorescent lighting options. These fixtures often emit various shades of white, ranging from a very cool, almost daylight tone, which can be quite crisp, to a warm, rosy streetlight glow. Some interior design consultancies love fluorescent lights for London kitchens, where they illuminate workspaces but save on electricity bills. However, other interior design consultancies stay well away from fluorescent options because their colour does not change as they are dimmed. Fluorescents merely become less bright under such conditions, which can contribute to an unattractively dull, and almost grey, lighting effect.

That brings me to the end of my series “DeLIGHTed by Design.” Thank you for letting me share with you about how London interior design consultancies create fabulous lighting schemes!

Decorating ones bedroom can be a mighty task but thanks to useful bedroom interior design tips from the experts, you can create a lovely, pleasant and a welcoming space for yourself and your partner.

Bedroom is undoubtedly the most important room in your home; hence it requires a lot of thought and creativity for bedroom interior design. You should take extra care while decorating your bedroom. The right kind of furniture, color, painting, accessories and of course the bed will make your bedroom a place where you can truly relax and unwind and find solace when you most need it.

Furniture for bedroom is always given top priority in bedroom interior design. Choosing the right kind of bedroom furniture will help you create a pleasant atmosphere around the room. Your bedroom furniture should depend on the space available for your bedroom. The material for bedroom furniture should match or at least be similar to the rest of the furniture in your home. Matching home décor is very important to give your home a uniformed look.

Master bedroom in particular needs extra thought when bedroom interior design is concerned. It is your personal space but it is the heart and soul of your house, so it needs special bedroom interior design. You need to decorate this space with items that are comfortable as well as useful.

The number one rule in bedroom interior design is to avoid clutter. This space is to relax and cluttering gives a very negative effect to the room. You won’t get peace of mind with clutter around you. Plus it’s not good for passing positive energies.

Choose your bedroom furniture that suits the décor of your home. If you have a contemporary look throughout your home, then choose bedroom interior design that matches that look. Classic and traditional bedroom interior design is a great way to decorate one’s bedroom, provided you have the taste and budget for it. Your bedroom furniture should fit the style of your décor. Whether you go for traditional, modern, semi-classic, retro or rustic, make sure your bedroom interior design does justice to the theme.

You can also choose to mix and match styles for your home. You can use a modern look for your living room, a contemporary kitchen and a classic bedroom. These different styles should blend well though. Avoid being too out of the way. Complimenting styles always make a home look more beautiful.

Selecting bedroom furniture can be a overwhelming task, but nonetheless, it is also one of the most important task for any homeowner. Invest on a bed that suits your style as well as comfort. Go through as many bedroom interior design books and catalogues as possible to give you a better choice on bedroom furniture. Choose the right size of the bed. A bulky bed for a small bedroom will clog your space and clutter your surroundings.

Interior design professionals in London love to make a difference in their clients’ lives. And one way they do that is with the art of “space planning” – a fabulous way to re-envision a home or office to ensure great flow. Think of your kitchen.

The way the stove is positioned with respect to the refrigerator may not immediately strike you as being that important … but the interior design professional knows that it absolutely is! Alternatively, think of your family room. How the seating is positioned might not immediately grab your attention, but a professional interior design boutique will have this first in mind. When space planning is done right, the flow of your London home will look and feel great, and the way you move around your house will suddenly become efficient and time-saving. Since most Londoners are desperate for more time in our busy lives, many people will hire an interior designer in London to plan their space just for that benefit! Some people worry about the cost, but just think of the cost-equivalent benefit of having more time on your hands to do what you really want! Many people call that priceless – and maybe that is the real value of interior design companies in London today.

Any interior designer knows that an essential part of space planning is to design with natural light in mind. Many of today’s top Interior Design London consultancies will focus on so-called “window treatments” to achieve the desired effect. Window treatments is a fancy term for things like blinds, shutters, panels, curtains, valences, shades, and even coloured panes of glass. Anything that gives a window its design is basically a window treatment. Professional interior designers in London focus on adding beautiful design elements by allowing more or less natural light to percolate into a room. The interior design team could choose to focus on sparkly, dappled light effects to beautify a favourite vase or antique. Alternatively, the interior designer could think mainly about form and function – perhaps by allowing plentiful bright sunlight into a room to make sure it stays warm during the wintertime, improving the London homeowner’s mood while cutting down on heating bills.

London can be chaotic and crazy at times. But space planning and window treatments to “shed light” on that space might be exactly what you need to create a calm and relaxed mindframe. The professional interior designer will understand the theory of space planning and advise you on how to best achieve these effects. Interior design is meant to be an expression of who you are. Choose what you love and just relaxing at your London home will feel like a real treat.

Home Interior Decoration is nothing but a practice of restructuring and designing anything that forms part for the interiors, including, walls, doors, windows, furniture, lighting, texture, etc. Interior decoration is a skill that not only needs a lot of intelligence and creativity, but it also requires effort, money and time. While designing the home it becomes important to focus on very tiny bit of information and detail. The imagination must be allowed to run free, and before you can realize, your home would transform in the home of your dreams, right before your eyes!

Prior to drawing any conclusions, check the durability, affordability and feasibility of the options. Some factors to consider while opting for interior decoration are:

Start with deciding on the look you desire to have. Select form calm, rustic, sleek, loud, traditional or modern look. Everything goes well, varying with your tastes and preferences.

Make sure you compare as many options as possible, weighing their advantages, disadvantages, prices, durability, etc. Before settling for anything, do your research well from the magazines, internet, brochures, television shows, etc.

For the perfect look, or to save your own precious time, you may settle for a professional in home decoration. Explain to your home decorator clearly what you desire and what your predetermined budget for this entire affair is.

Ask your neighbors, friends and relatives for their opinions. Their suggestions and experiences can throw light on some very crucial points that may be capable of affecting your decision on any particular given matter.

You may like to consider the Indian art of Vastu Shastra or the Chinese Feng Shui, as you go about decorating your house. These are two extremely popular beliefs that revolve around such techniques that can free your surroundings off any possible ‘negative energy’ that may be prevailing. This idea are said to promote well being and prosperity.

Adding a personal touch to your house is a good idea. You can have crafts work and paintings that you have made yourself. Or you can simply hang some family pictures. It makes your home cozy, refreshing and also inviting. Do it well, and manage it properly so that the place feels full of warmth and love!

And last of all, do not stray form your budget. Always keep your budget in your mind. It is important to keep comparing the various prices of different lightening, furniture, flooring, paints, and all kinds of other things. Check them all out properly, so that you neither forget your budget, nor do you end up opting for something which is not really good enough, quality wise. Though interior decoration tends to be an expensive business, doing to efficiently and well enough can get you a lovely home, without really emptying your pockets on endless expenditures.

Interior decoration is capable is truly transforming your home, making it full of joy and happiness. Keep

When it comes to wall coating, there is an abundance of choices to be had. Interior design has seen an upsurge in popularity over recent years and the home has now become a place to show off your taste and skills in this new area of fashion.

The wall coating you choose will come and go into fashion more often than the choice between big knickers or thongs, bootcuts or skinny jeans. Once you get that hugely patterned, black flock wallpaper up the trend will be for neutral emulsion before the paste has had chance to dry.

As a wall coating, wallpaper has had a long and varied history. From the intricate designs of Victorian patterns through seventies flock that has recently seen a revival, there has also been delicate pastels in stripes, flowers and sometimes a mix of both.

Embossed wallpapers were quite trendy for a while and are still available. They do the job of covering over dodgy cracked plaster and hiding all manner of imperfections. This is then painted to your own preference but I’ve never seen an embossed paper that didn’t cast shadows on itself thus dulling an colour you may add to it.

Emulsion as a wall coating has also enjoyed periods of popularity. Different finishes have been experimented with from eggshell that was hot news for families as it made surfaces washable, through to matt and now one that gives the appearance of a wall coating of dusted chalk. This fashion harks back to Victorian times and many people strive for that authentic look.

One of the best reasons people like to paint their walls with emulsion is the vast possibilities when it comes to colour. Self expression knows no bounds now that we are able to take any object down to the nearest DIY centre and get the colour matched up to put on our walls. Of course, this doesn’t guarantee good taste in wall coating but it does allow for individuality.

One of the worst decorating faux pas I have ever seen is that dreadful quick fix that was hailed as a success by the one hour decorating shows on TV. You know the ones, where everything is slapped over with a hideous coloured emulsion and what can’t be ripped out is covered with MDF? These were the shows responsible for making us paint over wallpaper. Unless it’s lining paper, don’t do it. It gives the effect of – well, of painted over wallpaper! The worst wall coating you could possibly have.

And who could forget the dreaded eighties penchant for Artexed walls. What a nightmare! Everybody was slapping Artex on their walls leaving you with a wall coating that had the ability to remove several layers of skin every time you passed by. Of course, this could then be painted with all manner of emulsions. This never helped make it look any better but it made you feel like the job was complete.

The nineties were spent with all different methods of removing Artex being touted through interior design magazines. This is lethal stuff and it seems the best idea is to skim over it with more plaster. Ok, so it takes several inches off the overall size of your room but it makes it look about a foot bigger so you can’t lose really.

Of course, wall coatings on the outside of the house are also subject to trends. Rendering, bare brick, painted brick, treated with anti burglar paint, all sorts have been available over the years. I once had neighbours that all looked like in-breds and the multitude of children that lived in that house were a nightmare. They would hang over the fence on a Sunday afternoon and see how far they could spit – and that was just the girls! I painted the top of my fence with non-drying paint and that gave me hours of fun because they didn’t know where it was coming from and kept coming back for more!

And who could consider any wall coatings without remembering the dreaded pebbledash or cladding? To coat you house in this is just a sellers nightmare today. It is assumed it is covering up all sorts of damage and decay and never, ever looked nice.

Of course, there are all manner of wall coatings on the market today that claim to do all manner of things for your house. But no doubt this will be a passing phase too.

If you’re thinking about getting a degree in art and design you’re probably wondering what the job outlook is like. The career options vary greatly. Once you are done with school you could become an animator, fashion designer, graphic designer, interior designer or photographer depending on what kind of program you complete. The art design salary range for most common art design salary can vary and might change depending on a number of factors.

If you are looking at jobs such as movie animator or video game animator, it can be difficult to pinpoint your exact earning potential. The kind of company you work for, how much experience you have, whether or not you’ve completed the required years of school, where you live and whether you work on a contract or permanent basis will all affect your salary. The median art design salary for cartoonists and animators is between about $45,000 and $61,000.

A career in fashion might sound lucrative, but only the very top of the best fashion designers in the world earn millions or billions of dollars. It has been estimated that the middle 50 percent of fashion designers in the U.S. with three to five years experience earn between $35,000 and $52,000 with room for more earning potential if your career grows. The same is true of jobs in the interior design field. In their first two years in the industry, most interior designers make anywhere from $29,000 to just over $41,000. But after eight or more years of experience, that art design salary range is more like $54,000 to $81,000.

Graphic design is another great avenue to take if you are thinking of getting a degree in the arts, as this is a burgeoning field. There are many career choices in the graphic arts, though, and the median salary varies quite a bit from one job to the next. The median art design salary is $72,000 for an art director, $98,000 for a creative director, $45,000 for a designer, $62,000 for a senior designer, $60,000 for a freelance designer, and $55,000 for a web designer. An entry-level designer will only earn around $35,000, but there is great room for advancement. As with any job, it’s important to do as much research as you can to find the right career.

Consider a room, which is beautifully design, but not fulfilling your requirement, what this design called? Design Failure, Interior designing is not for designing home or office just to look beautiful, important factor is to fulfill requirement while keeping it beautiful, so interior designing is to balance both, designing aspect and requirement aspect, if you just start designing by making room space beautiful, your client might rejects your design.

First step in the interior designing is to understand the requirement of your client, its always be a better idea to make questionnaire, put as much detail questions as you can do, sit with your client and observe his personality, invite him or her in your office, when you think you fully understand client requirement, now start your drawing, first only draw basic requirement, no fancy curves, nothing, just simple basic design, just put things in better places, measurement aspect and that’s all, when you finish basic design, now start making your design beautiful.

Imagine, imagine, imagine, your imagination is king in interior design, if you are not good at imagination, you might be fail in interior designing, imagine different colors, lighting, material, curves in mind, start making it beautiful, lighting, colors, material, curve, whatever you have in your mind, place it at your canvas, than make a master piece, this will be approve by client guaranteed, because this 100 % fulfill your client requirement and also its beautifully design, this is the formula of designing,

Understand requirement of client.

Making things out of this requirement,

Putting these things at better places.

At final step, start making it beautiful.

Professional interior designers are expertly trained in the use of lighting features to create breathtaking results. In this four-part series which I call “Colour Me Brightly: Understanding Light in Interior Design,” I draw on my experience in London’s interior design community to explain this fascinating subject. This second article talks about how to create patterns using illuminated materials.

Any perforated textile, when lit from the back or from the inside, will speckle adjacent forms with pattern, from point strips and pirouettes to constellations and dazzling laser specks. The professional interior designer can use the trim of a window covering to create fabulous banding across a shiny floor covering in the London summer. Some interior design firms love to use ornamental metal lanterns to paint fiery asteroids on walls and furniture, while light projected through a sculpted screen can create magnificent abstract outlines in expressive contemporary interior design schemes. A factory-inspired metal stairwell with perforated treads – of the type often reinterpreted for ultra-modern interior design schemes – can throw tiny checkmarks of light onto local furniture when exposed to a bright London sky in springtime. A fabulous option with a wooden staircase would require the interior designer to specify a grit-washed tread, to deliberately throw stunning shadows from the rail onto the adjacent wall. Abstract wire-mesh sculptures by local London artists can engender powerful interior design emotions, with the pattern even becoming more important than the object itself! Interior designers can expressively use perspective to distort the pattern from complete realism, when lit front-on, to Baconesque abstract enchantment when illuminated at an acute angle. The same effect can be created by using mirrors to refocus natural light from bay windows in some of the more luxurious London residences.

Glass is another popular tool for patterns. A frosted glass table can be lit from above with a halogen downlighter to cast intricate outlines of reflected light onto the ceiling, and the interior designer can even use positioning to cause refracted light to splash abstract patterns onto the floor underneath the table. I have seen some London Interior Design consultancies deliberately illuminate trophy-style glassware on display shelves from the front so that the etching on the glass throws deep shadows that recapitulate a core design theme.

In the next (third) article in this series called “Colour Me Brightly!” I will reveal another secret of London’s interior design community: how to create patterns with opaque objects.

Interior Design – How to furnish and decorate a small living room – video tutorial.
Help answer the question about interior design
How do you go about starting an interior design business?
I haven't done any research or anything, so don't come down on me too hard for asking.
My degree is in Architecture but I have always been more interested in interior & kitchen design, plus you don't need a license to practice interior design in the US.
Any thoughts, resources?
And where do designers get those enormous design catalogues from? (think Candice Olson from Divine Design) Manufacturers?
Hi, I live in NY state. We don't need one here, as far as I know.
